Nick Mills Memorial Lecture 2011

Howard Newitt and David McDonald attended the third Nick Mills lecture held again at the Lloyds of London Library.  This event which is run by the Lloyds bloodstock committee provides one of the few opportunities for leading equine vets and insurers to meet.
This year’s lecture was given by Professor Derek Knottenbelt from the University of Liverpool Equine Hospital.  Derek recalled many collaborations with Nick particularly in the area of wound healing which was a subject of great interest to them both.  The main body of the lecture was on Professor Knottenbelt’s current research area of headshaking for which an association with EHV is proposed and this condition may be analogous with trigeminal neuralgia in people.

The lecture concluded with impassioned pleas for better relations between insurers and the veterinary profession and also further support for the ‘Horsepower’ charitable campaign of which Derek Knottenbelt is a leading figure.

The second Nick Mills Memorial Lecture was held in the Lloyds of London library on 1st November 2010 and we were again fortunate that Nick’s widow Vicky and son Tom were able to attend.

The lecture was kindly sponsored by the Lloyds Market Association and Bloodstock Underwriters Committee in memory of Nick who did so much to foster links between the Bloodstock insurance and Veterinary worlds.

Julian Lloyd, chairman of the Bloodstock Underwriters Committee introduced the guest speaker, Ian Wright MA VetMB DEO DipECVS MRCVS of the Newmarket Equine Hospital. Ian began by showing a yearbook photo featuring Nick at Cambridge in the 1970’s complete with a selection of fashions of the period. Ian’s talk charted the development of equine arthroscopy describing the multitude of areas in which this technique is used. A wide variety of intra-operative images were shown which allowed the audience to understand some of the complexities of the procedure.

The Hon. David Howard thanked Ian for his fascinating lecture and for sharing some of his personal memories of Nick.

Nick Mills Obituary

17th November 2009

Approximately 60 delegates attended the inaugural Nick Mills Memorial lecture, held in the Lloyd’s of London library on 17th November 2009.

The lecture was kindly sponsored by the Lloyd’s Market Association & Bloodstock Indemnities Committee.

The lecture was introduced by Howard Newitt, Nick Mills’ business partner and Julian Lloyd, Chairman of Lloyd’s Market Association.

Dr. Sue McDonnell of Pennsylvania State University was kind enough to fly over from the United States especially to give the lecture and the audience was very privileged to hear such an internationally renowned speaker. The lecture was entitled “Stallion Psychology and Physiology” and gave the audience much food for thought in terms of how stallions are managed, particularly in the larger studs. A lively question and answer session followed the main lecture.

The lecture was drawn to a close by the Hon. David Howard who thanked all who had attended in Nick’s memory, especially Nick’s widow, Vicky, and son Tom.
